History in our time.
Hardcover, dj, large 8vo, XI + 308 pp. Index. Essays on 19th and 20th c. Great Britain, full of human detail, sceptical and fair-minded treatment of his subjects. 800 gram. Cannadine, °Birmingham, 1950, Director of the Institute of Historical Research in London. In chapter 16 DC discribes how the Empire was won and for what reasons. In ch. 22 he deals with the personality of the 'Colossus' Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) and his African dream 'from the Cape to Cairo'. C. argues that we will never understand Rhodes if we refuse to see the broader historical perspective of this titan, who was in fact no exception in his time. There were many more 'robber-baron plutocrats' like Rhodes.
