English landed society in the nineteenth century

Caird, English Agriculture in 1850-1851). Bibliography, index. This book deals in the main with the economic history of the landed interest, and with its role as a social group. It includes much agragrian and some industrial history as seen from the landowners' point of view. It is based on research in a multitude of private collections of manuscripts. Research in many County Record Offices. Pays attention to the New Domesday Survey of 1873 (the first since 1086): 80% of the land of the United Kingdom was owned by less than 7.000 persons. At the end of the 19th c. old nobility and 'nouveau riches' mix (marrying into new wealth). The author is Lecturer in Modern History at the University College London.
